Despite strict restrictions imposed on Germany after World War I, Krupp engineers, in collaboration with Swedish Bofors, designed a gun ahead of its time. The 88 mm caliber became a symbol of German artillery powera weapon the Allies respected deeply.
The Flak 18 was mounted on a distinctive cruciform carriage, allowing rapid 360° rotation and firing in any direction. This heavy, massive, and impressive gun required powerful tow vehiclesinitially three-axle trucks, and later the half-track tractors Sd.Kfz.7 and Sd.Kfz.8, which became permanently linked to its combat history.
